NTL SOFTBALL: WELLSBORO CAN'T HOLD LEAD IN SEASON-OPENING LOSS AT CANTON (24 PHOTOS) (2023-03-24)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
CANTON — The Lady Hornets took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning here Friday, but Canton scored 10 runs in the frame and went on to top Wellsboro 15-5 in both teams’ season opener.

Wellsboro took a 5-2 lead when Lexi Urena drove in two of the Lady Hornets’ three runs in the second inning with a no-doubt home run after Mariah Borden had singled to lead off the inning and Jordyn Abernathy reached base on an error.

Canton scored a run in the fourth inning, then exploded for their 10-run fifth and added a pair of runs in the sixth to end the game at 15-5.

The Hornets opened the game with a pair of runs, taking advantage of a pair of Canton fielding errors and two walks to take the early 2-0 lead. The Lady Warriors answered with two runs in the bottom half to tie it up at two.

Urena started in the circle and went five and a third innings, allowing 11 runs on four hits, three hit batters and six walks with eight strikeouts. Rylie Boyce threw two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on two hits and four walks and Borden gave up one hit and recorded one out.

Borden and Dresden Del Rio each had a pair of hits, with Borden scoring a run and Del Rio driving one in. Urena’s homer was Wellsboro’s final hit on the day and the sophomore collected two RBI and a run scored.

Abernathy scored two runs while Maddi Bordas scored a run and Boyce had an RBI.

Wellsboro, 0-1, will look to rebound quickly as they travel to Hughesville on Saturday.
