NTL TRACK & FIELD: NORTH PENN-MANSFIELD SQUADS READY FOR OPENING MEET (2023-03-27)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
MANSFIELD — The North Penn-Mansfield boys and girls Track & Field teams are putting the final touches on their preseason in preparation for their ’23 season opener on Tuesday.

The Lady Tigers went 2-5 in the NTL last season and sent seven athletes to the District 4 Championships in six events.

“We took a small group to Districts,” Coach Jim Farrer says, “with all but one girl returning. We’ll look to the freshman and sophomore classes to step up and fill the void of our lone graduate.”

Junior Tierney Patterson returns after qualifying in both the discus and the javelin last year, as does senior Darby Stetter (High Jump) and Addison Farrer (1600).

The Lady Tigers had two relay teams compete at Districts .. the 4x100 team with Stetter, Kendelle Holleran, Tessa Mitchell and Anna Kennedy .. and the 4x400 team with Kennedy, Holleran and Addison Farrer. All return for the ’23 season.

Other key returners noted by Coach Farrer include Madalyn Farrer, Madelynne Johns, Ara Furry, Jay Horvath and Jaclyn Nelson.

“With several of our veteran scorers only being sophomores last season, we relied on newcomers for points,” says Farrer, “We improved over the course of the season and had some of those newcomers really start to figure out their events.”

This season, Farrer points to a trio of freshmen as immediate contributors .. Nora Furry, Lindsey Wilson and Brooke Wilcox.

“We are adding a few girls from last year's Jr. High league championship team so we hope they can make an impact early, “ Farrer says.

On the boys side, the Tigers’ top priority is replacing points lost to graduation.

“We graduated a lot of consistent points and district qualifiers,” Farrer says, “We also had a nice mix of veterans and newcomers last year that contributed throughout the season. We’ll look to our returning athletes and newcomers to step up early to fill the void.”

Returning District Qualifiers include Brody Burleigh (javelin, shot), Brady Stetter (long jump, high jump, 4x100), Jett Harold (javelin, 4x100, 4x400), Zack Wilcox (800, triple jump, 4x400), Cedric Miller (4x400), Brayden Johnson (4x400, 4x100) and Jackson Brion (4x100).

Farrer says returners Tristyn Shuman and Luke Tice will also contribute heavily this season, as will newcomers Brody Grinnell, Charles Aumick, Kevin Clemente and Luke Kreger.

The goals for both the boys and girls’ teams are consistent.

“Our goals are pretty simple,” Farrer says, “we want to improve throughout the season both as individuals and as a team .. along with qualifying more athletes for the District IV meet and have the returning qualifiers improve their seedings.”

Both the boys and girls squads are scheduled to open their seasons with a visit to Athens on Tuesday.
