NTL BASEBALL: STRONG FINISH LIFTS WELLSBORO TO LOPSIDED WIN OVER NEB (2023-03-30)

ROME — Wellsboro took a two-run lead into the sixth inning against Northeast Bradford here Thursday, then exploded for 17 runs over the final two frames to claim a 23-4 win over the Panthers.

The Panthers scored first, plating a run in the bottom of the first, before the Hornets answered with three runs in both the second and third innings.

Drayden McGee, Lucas Cuneo, Alec Magli and Conner Adams all singled in the second inning, scoring McGee, Cuneo and Marek Mascho, who had walked. Gabe Sprouse, Mascho, McGee and Caden Smith all singled in the third inning and Adams added a sacrifice fly as the Hornets plated three more runs .. Sprouse, Mascho and McGee.

NEB would cut the lead to 6-4 with a run in the third inning and two in the fourth, before Wellsboro sent 29 batters to the plate over the final two innings .. scoring five runs in the sixth and 12 in the seventh .. to run away with the 23-4 win.

Eleven Hornets accounted for 17 hits in the game, led by Magli and Mascho with three hits apiece. Magli added three RBI and scored two runs while Mascho had an RBI and scored three times.

McGee and Cam Brought each had a pair of base hits, and Brought had three RBI while McGee had an RBI and scored three runs. 

Smith (3 runs, 2 RBI, 4 SB), Adams (3 runs, 2 RBI, 2 SB), Cuneo (1 run, 1 RBI, 2 SB), Sprouse (1 run, 1 RBI), Brayden Abernathy (1 RBI, 2 runs), Ryder Bowen (2 RBI, 1 run) and Cameron Owlett each had a base hit and Jacob Heckman had an RBI and a run scored and Garrett Kaltenbach had an RBI.

Smith earned the win for Wellsboro, going four innings and allowing four earned runs on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Brought threw the final three, giving up no runs or hits with two walks and seven K’s.

The Hornets move to 3-0 on the season with the win. They’re scheduled to host non-league Hughesville on Saturday at 3 p.m.
