NTL SOFTBALL: BIG FIFTH LIFTS NP-LIBERTY TO WIN OVER WILLIAMSON (2023-03-30)

ELKLAND — North Penn-Liberty used a huge 10-run fifth inning to take down Williamson here Thursday, running away with a 16-2 win over the Lady Warriors.

The Lady Mounties led 4-2 after three innings and 6-2 going into their big fifth inning, plating 10 runs and highlighted by a McKenna Lightner home run that provided the 16-2 final.

Mackenzie Tice started in the circle for NP-Liberty and went four innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits, no walks and nine strikeouts. Haley Litzelman threw the final inning, giving up a hit and striking out two.

The Lady Mounties took a 3-0 lead to open the game as Saige Lehman and Megan Spohn drew walks and Tice singled before Payton Chapel delivered an RBI double in the top of the first. 

After a scoreless second inning, NPL added a run in the third inning when Litzelman singled and eventually scored, and Williamson scored their lone runs of the game in the bottom third when Payton Wheaton, Gracie Stephens and Peyton Blend strung together base hits to cut the lead to 4-2 as they entered the fourth.

Lehman would reach base in the fourth after getting hit by a pitch and Tice and Litzelman each singled and the Mounties took a 6-2 lead into their big fifth inning. 

There, NPL sent 13 batters to the plate and eight of the Mounties’ nine starters scored in the frame, including Kiscadden and Lightner scoring twice each.

Tice, Litzelman and Chapel each had two hits on the day. Chapel and Tice each had two RBI and Tice scored three runs, and Litzelman added an RBI and two runs scored.

Lightner had a home run, four RBI and two runs scored, and Spohn had a hit, two runs scored and an RBI. Lehman had a base hit and scored three runs, while Smith had a double and a run scored, Marissa Griess had a hit and scored twice and Alexia Kshir had an RBI.

Williamson had three hits in the game, by Stephens, Wheaton and Blend, and Stephens and Wheaton scored runs.

NP-Liberty stays unbeaten on the young season at 2-0, while Williamson falls to 1-2 with the loss. The Lady Warriors are scheduled to visit Campbell-Savona on Saturday at 3 p.m., while NP-Liberty is scheduled to host Wyalusing on Monday.
