NTL SOFTBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY WRAPS UP SMALL-SCHOOL TITLE WITH PAIR OF LEAGUE WINS OVER SAYRE (2023-05-16)

WESTFIELD — Cowanesque Valley made light work of visiting Sayre here Tuesday, sweeping a season-ending double-header and securing the NTL-II Championship with 16-2 and 15-0 wins over the Lady Redskins.

The Lady Indians finish the regular season 16-3 overall, including a title-winning mark of 12-2 in the NTL and 7-1 in the small-school division.

Makenzie Surine pitched the first game for CV, going five innings and allowing two runs on six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. 

Ruby Sherman had two of CV’s 15 base hits in Game 1 .. both doubles .. and added five RBI and two runs scored. 

Katie Adams, Keyana Thomas and Logan Hamilton each had two hits while Cassidy Andreason, Maddie Millard, Madison Huzey, Ariana Cary, McKenna Cary, Maddie Vandermark and Surine each had a hit. Surine and Huzey each had a double, an RBI and a run scored and McKenna Cary had a double and two RBI.

Maddie Bailey had an RBI and a run scored, Adams and Millard scored three runs each, Thomas and Andreason scored twice each, Kayla Hyde had an RBI and Vandermark scored a run.

CV opened Game 2 with a six-run first inning and scored three in the second, five in the third inning and their final run in the fourth to end the game early.

Laynie LaBarron pitched a four-inning one-hitter, walked one and struck out seven for the Lady Indians.

Hamilton had a pair of home runs for CV, driving in three runs and scoring three. Sherman had two base hits, two RBI and two runs scored and Huzey, Millard, Thomas, Ashley Woodring, Adams, Ella Churchill and Surine each had a base hit.

Surine had two RBI and Thomas, Woodring and Churchill each had an RBI, Millard, Woodring and Zeraya Wilson had two runs scored each and Huzey, Adams, Churchill and Surine each scored once. 

Cowanesque Valley (16-3, 12-2) awaits the start of the District 4 Class AA playoffs, where the Lady Indians will be the No. 3 seed in an 8-team field.
