COLLEGE FOOTBALL: WELLSBORO'S HUNTER BROWN TRANSFERS TO EASTERN KENTUCKY (2023-06-12)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportWELLSBORO — Hunter Brown, a 2019 Wellsboro grad and four-year member of the Saint Francis Red Flash football team, announced recently that he would be transferring to Eastern Kentucky University with two years of eligibility remaining.
Brown committed to Saint Francis after a dominating high school career for the Hornets, being named the NTL Player of the Year in both his junior and senior seasons.
“I’ll always be appreciative of SFU for being my one and only D1 offer,” Brown says, “and giving me the ability to play at that level. They’re the reason why I’m able to be where I am today. I’ve been there for four years and I figured it was my time to leave and explore my options.”
In Brown’s final season with SFU, the tight end hauled in 16 catches for 221 yards and three touchdowns and added 10 rushes for 46 yards and a score. Against Duquesne, Brown had five receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Saint Francis finished 9-3 overall and 7-0 in the NEC.
The Eastern Kentucky Colonels finished 7-5 a season ago, including a historic, 59-57, seven-overtime win against Bowling Green.
The Colonels have sent a number of players to the NFL, including recent Jets-signee QB Tim Boyle, TE Matt Lengel from Mechanicsburg, Pa, who won a Super Bowl ring with the New England Patriots in 2017, former Steeler punter Jordan Berry and DE Noah Spence from Harrisburg, who was drafted in the second round of the 2016 draft by Tampa Bay.
“I chose EKU because they are an established program that has everything that can give me the best chance at making it to the NFL,” says Brown. “They have great facilities .. the support around the football team is also great .. and they play great competition. I also like my chances of coming in and earning a starting spot.”
EKU will open their season on September 2nd at Cincinnati, followed by a game at Kentucky on September 9th. The Colonels play in the ASUN Conference, along with schools such as Austin Peay, Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton and North Alabama.
