THE SPORTS REPORT: WELLSBORO'S McCLURE EARNS PAIR OF TOP HONORS ON ALL-REGION BOYS TENNIS TEAM; WELLSBORO'S BORZOK ALSO EARNS TOP HONOR (2023-07-04)

The Sports Reports
There were several competitive tennis players within the region this season, both north and south of the border.

Wellsboro’s Peyton McClure had an impressive rookie season in both singles and doubles competition, earning him the The Sports Reports Boys Tennis “Player of the Year” honor. He posted a 15-2 record at No. 1 singles for the Northern Tier League champion Hornets.

The senior reached the District 4 singles quarterfinals before falling, and also joined teammate Jacob Abadi to win two doubles matches at the district championships.

McClure was also named the All-Tioga County (Pa.) Boys Tennis Player of the Year.

The fact that he was a rookie this season also makes McClure the clear choice for “Newcomer of the Year.”

Corning’s  Alex Peng and Nathan Sheng make up the “Doubles Team of the Year.” First-team selections last year, Peng and Sheng were state qualifiers for the Hawks this spring.

Wellsboro nearly swept the top honors as Andy Borzok has been named the “Coach of the Year.” The fourth-year mentor led the Hornets to a 6-0 record in NTL play and a 15-3 overall mark. Wellsboro also competed in the District 4 championships.
