NTL FOOTBALL: MUNCY PULLS AWAY FROM PANTHERS FOR 40-19 WIN (2023-09-22)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportBLOSSBURG — The Panthers tied the game up midway through the third quarter here Friday night, but Muncy used a big turnover and multiple NP-Mansfield penalties to pull away and earn a lopsided, 40-19 NTL crossover win.
Muncy’s Austin Johnson ran for 214 yards on just 19 carries to lead the Indians, who relied heavily on the rushing game and passed for just 15 yards.
The Indians struck early and took a 7-0 lead just a minute into the game when Johnson scored from eight yards out and the extra point kick was good.
The teams would trade possessions throughout the rest of the quarter, with the Panthers having several positive plays erased by penalties, including a long completion from QB Karson Dominick to Cale Wagner that was brought back to midfield from the two yard line due to a procedure call.
Dominick would finish 8-of-22 for 164 yards and two scores, as well as two picks.
Muncy extended their lead at the start of the second quarter on an 18 yard rushing TD, going up 13-0 after the failed extra point attempt.
NP-Mansfield would pin the Indians deep in their own territory on their next possession, and a bad punt snap by Muncy would get gathered up by Luke Sexauer in the end zone for a touchdown. Dominick’s extra point made it 13-7 with five minutes left in the first half.
Coming out of the break, NPM went on a drive that included completions to Cooper Shaw and Gabe Bellows and ended on a 19 yard TD pass from Dominick to Luke Kreger. The missed extra point left the score knotted at 13 each with 7:06 left in the third quarter.
The Indians retook the lead at the end of the quarter, scoring from two yards out and taking a 20-13 lead into the final frame.
The Panthers got a decent return on the ensuing kickoff, but a bad fumble call .. the runner was clearly down before the ball came loose .. would give Muncy the ball right back and they’d capitalize with another score to go up 26-13 with 10:35 left in the game. An interception of Dominick would lead to another Indian TD and the lead was 33-13.
The Panthers tacked on a late score as Dominick found Kreger down the left sideline and Kreger took it 74 yards for the score to pull to with two scores at 33-19, but Muncy would answer quickly and score to provide the 40-19 final.
Kreger caught two passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns, while Shaw had three grabs for 24 yards, Bellows had two catches for 32 yards and Wagner had two receptions for 15 yards. Wagner lead the Panthers with 57 yards rushing on 13 carries while Dominick rushed for 18 yards.
Defensively, Wagner had eight tackles on the night, while Shaw had seven and Sexauer had five stops to go with his fumble recovery for a score.
The Panthers fall to 1-4 on the season with the loss. They’ll look to rebound next Friday when they host Cowanesque Valley.
