NTL BASEBALL: HORNETS FALL TO MOUNT CARMEL IN FIRST ROUND OF DISTRICT IV AAA PLAYOFFS (2021-05-22)

WELLSBORO — The Hornets fell victim to a hot-hitting Mount Carmel team, giving up 21 hits and falling to the Red Tornadoes 19-5 in their District IV Class AAA opening-round game Saturday. 

Mount Carmel’s Caden Sandri hit for the cycle and Reed Witkoski added a home run for the Red Tornadoes.

Wellsboro opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as an Isaac Keane single scored Darryn Callahan, who had walked. 

The lead would not last long, as MC scored six runs in the second inning, and two more in the third.

The Hornets answered with two runs of their own in the second, as a Dylan Abernathy double scored Zach Rowland, who had singled, and Brock Hamblin singled Abernathy home.

Down 8-3 going into their half of the third inning, Keane led off the inning with a solo home run to cut the lead to four.

Keane finished 2-for-4 with a HR, two RBI and a run scored, and Abernathy had a double with an RBI and scored once.

Wellsboro added their last run in the fourth on a Conner Adams sacrifice fly that scored Blake Hamblin, who reached base on a walk.

Adams finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and Cameron Brought added a pair of hits. Brock Hamblin had a hit and an RBI, and Rowland had a hit. Callahan, Brody Morral and Blake Hamblin scored runs.

Mount Carmel scored two runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and five in the seventh, running away with a 19-5 win.

Rowland started on the mound for Wellsboro, going two and two-thirds innings and allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Brock Hamblin relieved Rowland and went three innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits, no walks and two K’s. Callahan pitched the final one and a third innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits and a walk.

The Hornets finish their season 12-8 overall and as NTL Large School champions, going 8-2 in the division.
