NTL SOFTBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY TOPPED BY CANTON IN DISTRICT IV QUARTERFINAL (2021-05-25)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportCANTON — The old adage says “it’s hard to beat a team three times in a seasonâ€, and it held true here Tuesday as Cowanesque Valley, after having beaten Canton twice this season, fell to the Warriors 10-2 in the first round of the District IV A playoffs.
The Lady Warriors struck for four first-inning runs, then both teams played scoreless until CV was able to plate a run in the fourth. Madison Hoopes reached base on an error and, after being moved around the bases on Abby Ackley and Makayla Vargeson sacrifices, scored on another Canton error off of the bat of Keyana Thomas.
Canton scored two more runs in the fifth inning, and CV scored one in the sixth as a Megan Hyde single scored Vargeson, who had also singled.
Up 6-2, the Warriors tacked on four more runs in the sixth inning to secure the win.
Makenzie Surine led Cowanesque Valley at the plate with two doubles. Hoopes, Vargeson, Hyde and Ruby Sherman had CV’s remaining hits.
Hoopes and Vargeson scored runs and Hyde had an RBI.
Hyde threw all six innings for the Indians, allowing 10 earned runs on 11 hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
The loss ends Cowanesque’s season with a record of 12-9, including 5-3 in the NTL small-school division.
