NTL BOYS SOCCER: WELLSBORO IN DISTRICT IV SEMIS (2023-10-30)

LOYALSOCK — The Wellsboro boys soccer team will look to extend their season Tuesday when they face Midd-West in the District IV Class 2A semifinals at Loyalsock High School.

The No. 4 seed Hornets shut out league-foe Williamson 3-0 in the quarterfinals to reach the semis, while Midd-West, the No. 8 seed, beat No. 9 seed Lourdes Regional 6-0 in the first round and upset top-seeded Milton 3-0 in the quarters. 

Wellsboro finished the regular season 14-3-1 and won the NTL Championship for the second straight year and for the third time in four seasons. 

They’re led by senior Caden Smith’s 18 goals and seven assists and junior Micaiah Fitch’s 16 goals and 13 assists, while junior Lucas Cuneo has 13 goals and nine assists on the season and senior Jacob Abadi has added six goals and three assists.

Keeper Mitchell Butler, a senior, has made 71 saves in 1,518 minutes with a 1.423 goals-against-average and six shutouts. 

Midd-West’s leading scorer is senior Noah Romig, with 16 goals and 11 assists, followed by nine teammates who have between three and seven goals. Keeper Cole Keister has 60 saves in 1,520 minutes in net with a 1.158 GAA. 

The two have several common opponents on the season, including: Montoursville beat Midd-West 2-1 while the Hornets topped the Warriors twice, 2-1 and 2-0. Both lost to Selinsgrove .. MW 4-1 and Wellsboro 10-1. Both beat Athens .. MW 4-0 and the Hornets 4-1 and 2-1 .. while Loyalsock beat Wellsboro 3-0 and Midd-West beat the Lancers 2-1. 

Midd-West eliminated Wellsboro from last season's playoffs with a 5-1 win in the quarterfinals.
