NTL BOYS SOCCER: CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON COMES TO AN END FOR WELLSBORO IN DISTRICT SEMIS (2023-10-31)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
LOYALSOCK — The Wellsboro boys’ soccer team had their championship season come to an end Tuesday as the Hornets fell 4-1 to Midd-West in the District IV Class 2A semifinals.

Midd-West came into the playoffs as the No. 8 seed and beat No. 9 seed Lourdes Regional before upsetting top-seeded Milton 3-0 to reach the semis. Wellsboro, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, beat league-foe / No. 5 seed Williamson 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

The Mustangs scored less than four minutes into the match Tuesday, then added goals with five minutes and 1:32 left in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the break.

Midd-West made it a 4-0 lead two and a half minutes into the second half, and Wellsboro’s Caden Smith tacked on a goal with 14 minutes left in the match to avoid the shutout.

The goal was Smith’s 19th of the season and 43rd of the senior’s career for the Hornets.

Midd-West held a 15-5 advantage in shots-on-goal and a 10-0 edge in corner kicks. Wellsboro keeper Mitchell Butler recorded 10 saves in net.

The Hornets finish the season with an overall record of 15-4-1, which included a 14-3-1 regular season record, a 10-1-1 NTL mark and a league title for the second straight season.

Look for a season recap on the Hornets and all of our Fall clubs soon.
