NTL VOLLEYBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY FALLS IN DISTRICT FINAL THRILLER (2023-11-02)

ATHENS — Cowanesque Valley took top-seeded South Williamsport to the wire in their District IV final here Thursday, but South rallied to take the final two sets for a 3-2 win to claim the Class A championship.

CV started strong and took leads of 7-3, 18-10 and 22-11 in their 25-14, first set win, but South answered, jumping out to an 11-5 lead in the second and evening things up at 1-1 with a 25-16 win.

In the competitive third set, the Indians played back-and-forth with the Mounties but found themselves down 22-17 and in danger of going down 2-1. A 4-0 run got CV to within a point before South added their final point and CV scored four more straight to earn the 25-23 win and a 2-1 lead. 

The teams played even to start the fourth set and were tied at 5-5 when South pulled away and finished the set with a 20-10 run to get the 25-15 win and force a fifth set. 

CV looked to be in total control to start the fifth and took a 6-1 lead, but South scored the next 11 points and took a 12-6 lead in the 15-point deciding set. The Indians scored the next four to cut the lead to 12-10, but the Mounties would close it out and get the 15-11 win and the District title. 

Maggie McClaren finished with six blocks, three aces, eight kills and an assist, while Madison Hartman had 25 assists, two aces and two kills. 

Katie Adams added six kills and an ace while Autumn Mead had six kills and an assist, Jesse Quick had three blocks and three kills and Madison Schoonover had three blocks, three kills and an assist.
