NTL CROSS COUNTRY: WELLSBORO DUO COMPETE AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (2023-11-04)
By: Chris ManningNorthern Tier West Sports ReportHERSHEY — Wellsboro freshman Lauren Kosek couldn’t have been happier with her performance at the PIAA Championships Saturday.
Kosek was 40th overall in 20:29 in the Class AA race.
“I’m super proud of myself,” she said.
Kosek was 50th at the mile, but worked way up as high as 31st with 1,000 meters to go, before fading a little bit late.
“I knew where I was from other people telling the runners around me what place they were in, so I did know,” explained Kosek. “But I wasn’t really focused on getting top 25.”
That won’t be the case next year when she’ll have this experience under her belt.
“It motivates me a lot to train hard,” she said. “Come back next year and hopefully medal.”
In the Class A boys’ race Max Macias was 114th overall in 18:42.
“I think I could have done a lot better if I didn’t get stuck in the crowd,” he said. “I could have gone faster, I think, and gotten a better time.”
Macias was 109th at the mile, but fell back to 122nd at the 2-mile mark before moving back up.
“It feels good,” Macias said about the experience. “I’ve never been to states before.”
