NTL VOLLEYBALL: HORNETS ENJOY SUCCESSFUL FIRST SEASON UNDER WARRINER (2023-11-07)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportWELLSBORO — The Lady Hornets had a successful first season under the tutelage of Head Coach Darcy Warriner in 2023, culminating with a first-round District IV Class AA playoff win.
Wellsboro qualified for the playoffs as the No. 6 seed after an 11-9 regular season record. Included in those wins were a pair of victories over Class A District 4 champ South Williamsport and the Hornets first win over league-foe Williamson since the 2020 season.
The Hornets’ last loss of the regular season came to Loyalsock, 3-0, on October 19th and the Lancers would claim the No. 3 seed for Districts, setting up a rematch between the two on October 28th in the Class AA quarterfinals.
Wellsboro avenged the earlier loss and swept the Lady Lancers 3-0 to advance to the semifinals, where their season would come to an end with a loss to North Penn-Liberty.
The Hornets racked up 461 kills on the season, an average of 6.2 per set, led by junior Lexi Urena with 148 (2.0/set) and senior Meredith Brownlee with 136 (1.8/set). Brownlee led Wellsboro with 176 points and had 125 digs and 44 aces, while Urena had 61 aces, 139 points, 131 digs and 12 blocks.
Freshman Blake Eckart joined Brownlee and Urena in playing all 75 of the Hornets’ sets on the season and added 68 kills, 86 points and 16 aces, while sophomore Taylor Main led Wellsboro with 149 assists and junior Arianah Lawton added 95.
Senior Natalie Cleveland had 317 digs to lead the Hornets and added 106 points with 16 aces, while junior Paige Logsdon returned from an injury to play in 37 sets and collected 38 kills and 14.5 blocks.
Senior Olivia Chilson contributed 49 kills, while Main added 102 digs, 149 points and 21 aces, Lawton had 80 points and 23 aces and freshman Ellie Largey had 73 points with 19 aces.
The Hornets will graduate five seniors, including Cleveland, Brownlee, Chilson, Rosalie Ladd and Lexi Fillmore.
