NTL VOLLEYBALL: NP-LIBERTY EARNS 7TH STRAIGHT LEAGUE TITLE IN '23 (2023-11-15)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
LIBERTY — North Penn-Liberty continued their dominance over the NTL in 2023, going unbeaten in league play and winning their 7th straight large school championship.

Under the direction of Head Coach Mitch Stetter, the Mounties cruised through their NTL schedule, going 14-0 and dropping only two sets (one to Williamson, one to Troy), but they’d go 0-3 in non-league matches.

Central Mountain beat NPL 3-2 while Corning won 3-0 and Williamsport won 3-1 to account for the Mounties’ three regular season losses.

NPL earned the No. 2 seed for Districts, as Northeast Bradford rolled through the regular season and went 19-1 to earn the top spot. The Mounties swept NEB in early October to give the Panthers their lone loss.

After sweeping Wellsboro for the third time of the season in the Class 2A semifinals, the Mounties faced Northeast Bradford and lost 3-1 to bring their season to an end with a 15-4 record.

The Mounties were led by an experienced group of seniors in ’23, some of which were contributors on both last year’s District championship team and the 2021 squad that was upset in the District finals by Wyalusing.

NPL’s seniors were Saige Lehman (183 kills, 196 digs, 121 pts., 27 aces), Megan Spohn (460 assists, 194 digs, 173 pts., 66 aces, 23 kills), Ella Swingle (151 kills, 172 digs, 130 pts., 33 aces), Payton Chapel (60 kills, 43 digs, 10 blocks), Reese Barrett (22 kills), McKenna Lightner (121 digs, 132 pts., 35 aces, 33 assists, 19 kills) and Hannah Kendall (51 kills, 22 blocks).

Lehman finishes her career with 633 digs,587 pts., 126 aces and 482 kills, while Spohn has had 861 assists, 466 digs and 156 aces for the Mounties and Lightner has recorded 518 digs.

North Penn-Liberty’s remaining roster consisted of juniors Rylie Smith (237 digs, 128 pts., 20 aces), Kaylee Graham, Addison Weightman and Madeline Youmans and sophomores Haley Litzelman (69 kills, 17 blocks, 96 pts., 30 aces), Kameron Lightner and Phoebe Ruth.
