NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: WILLIAMSON LADY WARRIORS EXCITED FOR UPCOMING SEASON (2023-12-01)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportTIOGA JUNCTION — Williamson girls basketball Head Coach Marissa Allen welcomes back four starters .. including last season’s All-Tioga County Player of the Year, Taylor Rae Jones .. as the Lady Warriors look to take a big step forward in ’23-’24.
“Our goal is to build upon the foundation that we started last year,” Coach Allen says, “to come out a stronger team.”
The Lady Warriors dealt with a couple key injuries during the season last year and finished 6-15, including eight losses by single digits.
Jones returns as the lone senior on Williamson’s roster following her outstanding 2022-’23 where she averaged 13.8 points per game, handed out 2.2 assists and grabbed 2.6 offensive rebounds per game while scoring in double figures in all but three of Williamson’s games. The Northern Tier West Sports Report’s All-Tioga County Offensive, Defensive and overall Player of the Year added 6.2 defensive rebounds and 3.7 steals per game.
Three other starters return, led by junior Olivia Meisner (9.7 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 1.9 SPG, 1.2 BPG) as well as sophomores Kenna Thomas (5.2 PPG, 5.5 RPG) and Maddi Jones (5 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 2 APG, 1.5 SPG).
Allen says that junior Avery Vinsek has potentially earned the fifth starting spot, explaining that Vinsek “has been a consistent player on varsity and has put in the time and work to round out the rotation.”
Coach Allen has liked what she has seen so far in practices and in a scrimmage with Coudersport on Wednesday.
“These five have really gelled,” says Allen, “and they work together to make things happen.”
The Warriors will have 16 players on the team this season, bolstered by a large freshman class that includes several girls that Allen says could contribute at the Varsity level this season in Bailey Snyder, Maeve Ficks, Olivia Nolan and Aubrey Wells.
The Warriors will open the season on Monday when they host North Penn-Mansfield, followed by another home game on Thursday with Northeast Bradford and the Gaelton Tip-Off Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Coach Allen believes her team is very ready to get the season started and to keep working toward their goals .. “to make an impact on the NTL this year and qualify for Districts.”
