HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL: HORNETS DROP SEASON / HOME OPENER TO MONTOURSVILLE (2023-12-04)

WELLSBORO — Wellsboro opened their boys basketball season here Monday night, falling to the visiting Montoursville Warriors 64-46.

Both teams started slow, with Wellsboro scoring their first points with three minutes left in the opening quarter to cut the Warrior lead to 7-2.  Hayes Campbell scored six points in the frame and the Hornets entered the second quarter down 14-8.

Campbell had a game-high 24 points to lead the Hornets, including a 10-for-12 effort from the free throw line. The senior added seven rebounds, a block and two assists on the night.

Montoursville exploded for a huge second quarter, hitting four of their nine made three pointers in the game and taking a 36-17 lead into the break.

The Hornets answered out of the locker room and had six players score in a 20-11 third that cut the Montoursville lead to 10 at 47-37. 

After a bucket by Campbell cut the lead to eight less than a minute into the fourth, Caden Smith would get the Hornets to within six at 47-41 with 6:30 left in the game. But Montoursville would hit 9-of-12 free throws and finish the game on a 17-5 run to secure the 64-46 win. 

Smith and Luke Rothermel each had seven points for the Hornets and Smith added five rebounds and four assists and Rothermel had four rebounds, while Mitchell Lechler had four points and Ian Hoose and Marek Mascho each had two points. 

The Hornets will look to rebound when they visit Williamson on Wednesday.
