THE SPORTS REPORTS: CORNING'S CORNFIELD TOPS ALL-REGION BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM; THREE TIOGA COUNTY RUNNERS MAKE LIST (2023-12-20)

There was a tight group at the top of the All-Region boys’ Cross-country list, with Corning’s Douglas Cornfield coming out as The Sports Reports’ All-Region “Runner of the Year.”

Cornfield was the Section IV runner-up, and just missed a state medal in the tough Class A field. He was also the STAC champion this year.

NEB’s Creed Dewing, Cowanesque Valley’s Kristian Mizdail, and S-VE’s John Garrison also had strong seasons.

Athens’ Graham Wanck is the “Newcomer of the Year.” Wanck earned a state berth in Class AA out of District IV, and was the highest finishing freshman in the state in that class.

NEB’s Adam Russell took a good team from last year and had them perform even better this season. The Panthers went undefeated in NTL dual meet action, repeated as District IV, Class A champions, and finished seventh in the state, good enough to earn him “Coach of the Year” honors.

The first team consists of Cornfield, Mizdail, Dewing, Garrison, Wanck, Corning’s Sebastion Boutwell, and Oweg’s Sullivan O’Donnell.

On the second team are Corning’s Jaxyn Mahoney, Gregory Homa, and Nicholas Ferratell, NPM’s James Knefly, Wyalusing’s Trennan Tewksbury, Towanda’s Jack Tavani, and NEB’s Aiden Kapr.

The third team consists of Wellsboro’s Max Macias, Towanda’s Jacob Carr, NEB’s Ayden Finch, Troy’s Evan Geer, Canton’s Lawrence Halbfoerster, Horseheads’ Kiran Gulati, and Owego’s Javan Belokur.
