HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: HULTZ TAKES 3RD, FOUR OTHER WARRIORS MEDAL AT SOUTHERN TIER MEMORIAL (2024-01-13)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportELMIRA — Williamson’s Joel Hultz finished 3rd at 190 pounds and the Warriors put five wrestlers on the podium at the Southern Tier Memorial tournament here Saturday.
Hultz won his quarterfinal match by fall (1:20) over Rylan Breidt (Troy) on Saturday morning, then fell to Cale Bastian (Milton) to drop into the consolation bracket. Hultz won 8-4 over Jayden Kiell (Tottenville-PSAL) to reach the consi finals where he pinned (3:43) Jacob Stoner (Chambersburg) to claim the bronze.
Owen Cummings (152) placed 5th for the Warriors. After losing his quarterfinal match to Caden Bellis (Tioga) by tech fall Saturday morning, Cummings won by fall (1:26) over Jonah White (SW), pinned (1:54) Kenyon Slater (Troy) and was pinned (4:25) by Lucas Mosher (HH) to reach the 5th/6th place match. Cummings won by fall (0:40) over Connor Davidson (Athens) to take home 5th place.
Luke Sottolano (285) finished in 7th place for Williamson and started off Day Two with a fall (1:49) over Mark McCane (Tioga), then won by a 3-1 decision over Tye Jashan (Vestal). He was pinned (1:28) by Alan Petrov (Tottenville-PSAL) and then won 7th place with a 3-2 decision over Frank Barrientos (Chambersburg).
Noah Robinson (124) placed 7th and started Saturday off with a fall (2:31) over Connor Garrison (Athens), then won by major decision (13-3) over Austin Fesinger (West Genesee) before falling (11-5) to Lucas Persun (Athens). Robinson claimed 7th place with a decision (5-4) over Connor Novakowski (Wyoming Area).
Ben Freeman (215) was the Warriors’ final medal winner, placing 8th. He was pinned (3:23) in his quarterfinal match Saturday by Aiden Hight (Chambersburg), then pinned (4:53) Patrick Croft (Odessa Montour-Watkins Glen). He’d get pinned (2:15) by Caleb Nason (Athens) and then again (2:09) in the 7th/8th place match by Reed Palmer (Troy).
The Warriors had four other wrestlers compete on Saturday as Hunter Simonds (108), Aidric Passerallo (145), Anthony Baker (145) and Riley Rall (160) were each eliminated after reaching Day Two.
Williamson had 11 wrestlers compete in all and placed 9th among the 32-team filed with 90 points, while Tioga (NY) had 19 entrants and ran away with the team title with 260.5 points.
