NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: TIGERS FALL TO LEAGUE-LEADING TROJANS FOR SECOND TIME (2024-01-30)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportTROY — The host Trojans built a double-digit lead by halftime here Tuesday and held North Penn-Mansfield off, topping the Tigers for the second time this season, 70-59.
Cooper Shaw and Karson Dominick scored 21 points each for Mansfield, but the Trojans’ Jack Burbage (30) and Evan Woodward (12) matched the Mansfield duo and got more help from their secondary scorers than the Tigers.
Shaw scored nine points in a high scoring first quarter, but Burbage netted 15 and Woodward hit a pair of threes to give Troy a 28-21 lead after a quarter of play.
Dominick scored six points in the second quarter but NPM only totaled eight points in the frame as Troy took a 45-29 lead into the locker rooms. A nine point third quarter by Dominick also couldn’t help the Tigers cut into the lead as they gave up 15 points to the Trojans and trailed 60-43 going into the final quarter.
Shaw hit for eight points in Mansfield’s 16-10 fourth quarter but it wouldn’t be enough as Troy secured the win with six free throws down the stretch and a pair of buckets by Woodward.
Jason Harer added eight points in the loss for Mansfield, while Tate Strange had five, Cade Kurzejewski had three and Patrick Yuma’s had a point.
The loss gives NP-Mansfield their first losing streak of the season as the Tigers fell to Northwest Area in their last outing. Now 12-5 overall on the season and 4-3 in the large school division, they’ll look to rebound quickly when they host Wellsboro on Thursday.
The Hornets topped the Tigers 46-40 in their first meeting .. in the Peg Berguson memorial Trophy game back on January 5th.
