NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY EARNS CROSSOVER WIN OVER WELLSBORO (2024-02-05)

WESTFIELD, Pa — Cowanesque Valley built a double-digit halftime lead and then held Wellsboro off in the second half to earn a 36-28 win in NTL girls basketball action here Monday evening.

The Lady Indians took a 6-2 lead after a quarter of play and had five players score in a 12-6 second quarter to take an 18-8 lead into halftime. 

Wellsboro cut a point off the deficit with a 9-8 third quarter and trailed 26-17 going into the final frame. 

Maddy Mascho scored twice for the Hornets to open the fourth quarter and CV’s lead was cut to five .. 26-21 .. before CV’s Logan Hamilton scored off an assist from Kyra Daley and Wellsboro’s Paige Logsdon kept the lead at five with a bucket .. 28-23.

Madison Schoonover scored for CV, Chloe Brandenburg hit her second 3-pointer of the game and Mascho connected for two and cut the Indian lead to 30-28 with just over two minutes left in the game. 

Wellsboro wouldn’t score again and Ella Churchill scored for CV and Millard and Woodring each hit a pair of free throws down the stretch to help CV secure the 36-28 win.

Churchill led CV with 12 points while Woodring had eight, Hamilton had six, Millard and Schoonover each had four and Daley had two points.

For Wellsboro, Mascho had a game-high 18 points while Chloe Brandenburg had six and Emily Morris and Logsdon each had two points. 

The win is CV’s second straight and the Lady Indians are now 6-13 overall on the season, 5-9 in the NTL and 3-5 in the small school division. Their next game is scheduled at small school leader NEB on Wednesday. 

Wellsboro falls to 8-11 on the season with the loss. They’re scheduled to return to play on Wednesday at large-school leader Troy.
