NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: WELLSBORO LOSES SEASON FINALE IN OVERTIME TO RAMS (2024-02-09)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportWYALUSING — Wellsboro took a two-point lead into the fourth quarter of their final game of the season against Wyalusing here Friday, but the Rams rallied to force overtime and the Lady Hornets fell, 56-52.
The Hornets would lead much of the third quarter and led by as many as five early in the fourth, but the Rams out scored them 14-9 the rest of the way to send it into overtime.
In the extra period Wyalusing held Wellsboro to just one bucket .. by Emily Morris .. out of seven possessions to pull out the win.
Paige Logsdon led Wellsboro with 17 points, 13 of them coming in the second half, before fouling out in overtime. Chloe Brandenburg added 15 points and Morris finished with 14. Emily Richardson chipped in with six points, while Maddy Mascho rounded things out with two.
Wyalusing had a big first quarter, jumping out to a 15-10 lead while Brandenburg netted four for Wellsboro.
The Rams would push their lead to as much as 21-12 before Wellsboro’s late run to make it a three point game at the half.
Logsdon dominated the inside for Wellsboro in the third quarter, scoring nine points as her team netted 16. She scored four straight to open the frame - making it an 8-0 run going back to the second quarter for the Hornets - to give Wellsboro a 22-21 lead.
The two teams traded buckets, then Logsdon and Mascho had baskets to put the Hornets back up 31-28.
A Wyalusing lay-up made it a 1-point game again, but Logsdon answered at the other end with an old fashion 3-point play. Wyalusing had the final score in the quarter to make it a 2-point game going into the fourth.
Morris opened the fourth by hitting two free throws, but a 4-0 Wyalusing run tied the game up at 36-all.
Logsdon would put Wellsboro back on top with a short jumper, followed by Brandenburg hitting a long jumper as they saw their lead swell to 41-36.
At the other end Wyalusing hit a three to make it a 2-point game again. The teams then traded buckets through the halfway point of the quarter as the Hornets nursed a 4-point lead.
Logsdon would come up with a big block, followed by a scuffle for the ball. Wellsboro appeared to recover but was called for a travel - then for a technical. The Rams made 1-of-2 free throws, followed by a 3-ball on the ensuing possession to knot the game up at 45-all with 3:00 to play.
Brandenburg hit her third 3-pointer of the game on Wellsboro’s next possession for a 48-45 lead.
The Hornets would get a stop after that, but then turned it right back over. That led to a Wyalusing jumper with 1:33 left to play to cut it to 48-47.
The Rams would get a steal and a lay-up to put Wyalusing up 49-48 with under a minute to play.
Brandenburg got fouled at the other end, putting Wyalusing in the bonus, but missed both freebies. However, Richardson came down with the rebound, and got it to Brandenburg, who laid it in for the 50-49 lead with 38 seconds to play.
Wellsboro then played airtight defense at the other end, forcing Wyalusing to call a timeout with nine seconds left.
The Rams drew a foul from Logsdon on a put back with 3.5 seconds left and hit the second freebie to tie the game at 50 and send the game into OT.
Nobody scored in the extra period until the 2:31 mark when Logsdon committed her fifth foul and the Rams made both to put Wyalusing up 52-50.
Wyalusing scored and Morris answered for Wellsboro to make it a 2-point game with 43.7 seconds left.
The Hornets pressed, but ultimately fouled and the Rams hit both to make it a 2-possession game with 26.6 seconds to play. Wellsboro’s final possession ended in a steal by the Rams, effectively sealing the win.
The loss ends the Lady Hornets' season at 8-13 overall and 6-11 in the NTL Large School Division.
