HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: MOUNTIES CROWN PAIR OF NORTH SECTION CHAMPS (2024-02-17)

ATHENS — North Penn-Liberty crowned a pair of North Section champs here Saturday and will send four of their six entered wrestlers onto the District 4 Championships next weekend.

Bryce Pequignot (107) and Easton Pequignot (172) each claimed a North title to help the Mounties finish tied for 5th as a team, while Brayden Pequignot (121) was the runner-up and Riley Oakes (145) placed third. 

Towanda won the team title with 224 points while Canton had 172.5, Athens had 169, Williamson had 116 and NP-Liberty and Wyalusing each had 103 points. 

At 107 pounds, Bryce Pequignot pinned his way into the finals, dropping Athens’ Matthew Schneider in the quarterfinals in :49 and NEB’s Mason Alexander in 1:48 to reach the final. There, the freshman Pequignot topped Sullivan County’s Andrew Kapec 6-1 to claim the crown. 

Easton Pequignot would also earn a pair of falls to reach the 172-pound final .. pinning Kaden Harris from Athens in 29 seconds and Wyalusing’s Ethan Vanderpool in 2:42. In the title match, the junior decisioned Wellsboro’s Ryder Bowen, 10-7.

Junior Brayden Pequignot pinned Troy’s Wilder Koch in the quarterfinals and beat Wyalusing’s Cole Patrick 6-4 in the semis. He’d fall to Sullivan County state medalist Colton Wade in the final in 5:28 to claim silver on the day.

At 145 pounds, Riley Oakes opened the day with a 7-0 win over Wyalusing’s Cade McMicken then lost 14-3 to Towanda’s Riley Vanderpool .. the eventual 145-pound champ. A 2:01 fall over Williamson’s Anthony Baker put Oakes in the consolation finals where he beat Athens’ Cooper Robinson 6-4 to claim 3rd place.

The Mounties had a pair of wrestlers finish outside of the top-4 to finish their seasons as Charles Aumick (114) placed 5th .. losing to District qualifiers Mason Vanderpool from Athens and Williamson’s Hunter Simonds while earning a fall over Wyalusing’s Boston McMicken and another pin in the 5th/6th place match over Sullivan County’s Cole Barton in 1:19. 

Gabe Bellows (160) was NPL’s final competitor and started the day with a pin of Towanda’s Tahshon Gardner before falling to eventual champ Hudson Ward from Canton in the semifinals. The senior lost two straight in the consolation bracket .. to Sayre’s Jordan Brown in :40 and to Williamson’s Aidric Passerallo in 2:29.

Next week’s District Championships will be held at Williamsport High School.
