NTL GIRLSBASKETBALL: WILLIAMSON FALLS IN SHOWDOWN FINAL (2024-02-17)

SAYRE — Troy used a big third quarter to pull away from Williamson in the NTL Showdown final here Saturday, beating the Lady Warriors 48-30 to claim the girls title.

Troy led 21-14 at halftime before a 21-11 third quarter extended the Trojans’ lead to 42-25 and a 6-5 advantage in the fourth provided the final score.

Taylor Rae Jones had 14 points to lead Williamson as Olivia Meisner added six. Kenna Thomas netted five, Madisen Jones and Avery Vinsek had two points each and Maeve Ficks chipped in with one point.

Williamson jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game but Troy answered with nine straight points. A late Taylor Rae 3-pointer cut it to 9-7 at the first horn.

A good free throw saw Troy take a 3-point lead, but it was erased by a Thomas three and the teams were tied at 10. The two teams then traded buckets before Troy went on a 7-0 run to take a 19-12 lead. 

Madisen Jones cut it to 19-14 with a pair of free throws, but a Troy put-back gave Troy a 21-14 lead at the halftime break.

The teams would trade buckets to start the third quarter, but with Troy up 26-20 they went on a 10-2 run to go up 37-22. 

Williamson would get it to 39-25 late in the frame but a Troy 3-ball put the Trojans up 42-25 as they headed to the final quarter.

Troy would out score Williamson 6-5 in the fourth as they played keep away much of the frame. The only points the Warriors had the second half of the quarter came on a free throw while Troy was able to get three lay-ups for their points.

Williamson, now 19-4 on the season .. with three of their losses coming to the Trojans .. will prepare for a District 4 Class 3A first-round match-up with 12-10 Bloom.
