NTL WRESTLING: WILLIAMSON SENDING FIVE TO DISTRICTS AFTER 4th PLACE FINISH AT SECTIONALS (2024-02-17)

ATHENS — The Williamson wrestling team had five wrestlers place in the top-4 and the Warriors finished in 4th place as a team at Saturday’s North Section tournament.

Owen Cummings (152) placed 2nd to lead the way for Williamson while Joel Hultz (189) was 3rd and Hunter Simonds (114), Ben Freeman (215) and Luke Sottolano (285) each placed 4th. 

Cummings pinned his way into the 152 pound finals with falls in 1:09 over Wellsboro’s Silas Mickey and in 1:53 over Towanda’s Chase Guerin. The senior lost to Wyalusing’s Ayden Hunsinger 11-2 in the championship to claim the silver.

At 189, Hultz started his day with a 1:37 fall over Athens’ Landon Layman then lost in 2:51 to Canton’s Michael Davis. The senior then pinned Wellsboro’s Evan Ingerick to reach the consolation finals and beat Troy’s Rylan Breidt 11-4 to place 3rd. 

Sophomore 114-pounder Simonds pinned Cole Barton from Sullivan County in 2:48 before falling in :29 to Towanda’s Tanner Vanderpool, pinning North Penn-Liberty’s Charles Aumick in 3:27 and losing to Athens’ Mason Vanderpool in 1:18 to claim 4th.

Freeman, a sophomore, placed 4th after losing his first match to Troy’s Reed Palmer by fall in 4:16, pinning Sullivan County’s Evan Brown in :12 and Wyalusing’s Daniel Fox in 4:52 before finally falling to Palmer again in the consolation finals in 2:40.

At 285, Sottolano opened the tourney with a pin of NEB’s Westen Perkins in 2:30 before losing 4-1 to eventual champ Joshua Nittinger from Athens. The sophomore then pinned Sullivan County’s Mason Weaver in 42 seconds, then fell to Canton’s Mason Harold 2-1 in the consi finals. 

The Warriors had a pair of wrestlers finish 5th .. senior Blaine Link at 139 and senior Aidric Passerallo at 160. 

Link lost his first match in 5:55 to Troy’s Logann Heasley before pinning NEB’s Kale Howland in :48. Link was then pinned in 3:20 by Canton’s Cohen Landis and claimed 5th place with a 1:33 fall over Heasley in the 5th/6th place match.

Passerallo pinned Sullivan County’s Ben Syester in 1:43 before falling by tech fall to Canton’s Hudson Ward, 19-3, and beating Towanda’s Tahshon Garner 6-4. A loss in 37 seconds to Troy’s Jacob Hinman left Passerallo in the 5th/6th place match where he pinned Liberty’s Gabe Bellows in 2:29.

Two Warriors finished 6th on the day .. Karter Osgood (121) and Anthony Baker (145) .. while Jeremy Fuhrer (172) did not place after falling to Athens’ Kaden Parris in 1:43, beating Sullivan County’s Brandon Templeton 9-6 and losing by fall to Troy’s William Steele in 1:47.

Osgood lost to Athens’ Zaire Campbell in 1:24, to Wyalusing’s Cole Patrick in 1:40 and by 14-3 decision to Towanda’s Brighton Yale. 

Baker lost his first match to Canton’s Holden Ward in 3:27, then pinned NEB’s Kelton Raymond in 16 seconds and beat Troy’s Carter Austin 8-5. The sophomore then lost by fall in 2:01 to Liberty’s Riley Oakes and in 2:42 to Wyalusing’s Cade McMicken. 

Williamson scored 116 team points to finish 4th behind team champ Towanda (224 pts.), Canton (172.5) and Athens (169). 

The District 4 championships will start on Friday and continue into Saturday at Williamsport High School.
