NTL WRESTLING: WELLSBORO'S BOWEN QUALIFIES FOR DISTRICTS WITH RUNNER-UP FINISH AT SECTIONALS (2024-02-17)

ATHENS — Wellsboro’s Ryder Bowen placed 2nd at the North Section tourney here Saturday and will be the Hornets’ lone representative at this weekend’s District championships. 

The Hornets collected 45 team points, good for 9th place, behind champ Towanda (224), Canton (172.5), Athens (169), Williamson (116), Liberty (103), Wyalusing (103), Sullivan County (102.5) and Troy (90.5) and ahead of NEB (43.5) and Sayre (14).

Bowen had a pair of falls to reach the 172 pound final, downing Sullivan County’s Braden Templin in 2:02 and Towanda’s Jace Gunther in 2:28. The junior would finish as the runner up after falling 10-7 to Liberty’s Easton Pequignot in the finals.

Hayden Stevens had the next highest finish for Wellsboro, placing 5th at 172 pounds. The sophomore lost his first match 3-1 to Towanda’s Zach Lantz then won 9-2 over NEB’s Connor Eastabrook and lost 6-2 to Troy’s Reed Palmer. Stevens won the 5th/6th place match in 58 seconds over Wyalusing’s Daniel Fox.

The Hornets had a trio of wrestlers finish in 6th place. 

Sophomore Mason Nowak had a 3-0 win over NEB’s Alex Gomez and lost three matches to finish 6th at 133 pounds, while junior Silas Mickey had a fall in 32 seconds over Sullivan Copunty’s Riggin McGowan and lost three matches at 152 pounds and junior Evan Ingerick lost three matches to place 6th at 189 pounds. 

Freshman Wyatt Kilburn went 0-2 on the day at 139 pounds. 

The District 4 championships will start on Friday and continue into Saturday at Williamsport High School.
