DISTRICT 4 BOYS BASKETBALL: CV INDIANS FALL TO GALETON COMEBACK IN CLASS A QUARTERFINAL (2024-02-20)

WESTFIELD — No. 3 seed Cowanesque Valley led by double-digits in the first half of their District 4 Class A quarterfinal match-up with Galeton Tuesday and took a slim lead into the fourth quarter, but the 6th-seeded Tigers would pull off the comeback and upset the Indians, 49-41.

CV scored the games first 11 points and held Galeton off the scoreboard until just over three minutes remained in the first quarter .. as Carter Ackley started things off with a baseline jumper, followed by a Fletcher Good drive, a Carsyn Kemp 3-pointer, a foul line jumper from Good and a pair of free throws by Jordan Vargeson. 

A Vargeson drive and finish made it 13-2 CV, but Galeton closed the gap with a 7-0 run. An Ackley jumper in the lane gave the Indians a 15-9 lead after the first frame. 

Vargeson and Ackley each had 11 points to lead CV while Larsen Swimley added 8 points, Good had 6, Carsyn Kemp had 3 and Josh Teague had 2 points. 

Swimley and Ackley each scored 4 points in a 10-10 second quarter push and CV took their 6-point lead .. 25-19 .. into the locker rooms. 

Vargeson scored to start the second half and following a Braiden Cimino 3-pointer for Galeton, Swimley scored to make it 29-22 CV with just over 4 minutes left in the third. 

The Tigers scored 6 straight to cut the lead to one before Vargeson hit a floater from the lane and Galeton got a pair of free throws, Vargeson hit two freebies, Good finished at the rim and Galeton beat the buzzer with a bucket to end the third with Cowanesque Valley leading 34-32.

Galeton’s John Martin tied the game with a bucket as the fourth quarter started and Zach Pagano gave the Tigers their first lead of the night at 37-34 with a 3-pointerwith less than a minute gone in the final frame.

A Josh Teague jumper drew the Indians to within one and Galeton answered with a pair of buckets to go up 41-36. Ackley drained a three and Swimley got a put-back to tie the game at 41 with 2:30 left, but the Indians wouldn’t score again and Galeton got another three from Pagano and five free throws down the stretch to seal the comeback win.

The loss ends Cowanesque Valley’s season with a 12-12 overall record. Galeton will advance to play No. 2 seed North Penn-Liberty .. winners over Sullivan County .. in the Class A semifinals.
