NTL BASEBALL: NORTH PENN-MANSFIELD HOLDS OFF HORNETS FOR SEASON OPENING WIN (2024-03-26)

MANSFIELD — Alex Davis homered and Cooper Shaw threw five innings of one-hit ball as North Penn-Mansfield opened their 2024 season with a 9-6 win over rival Wellsboro here Tuesday.

Wellsboro jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Mansfield scored four runs in the bottom of the first. The Hornets scored three more runs in the second and the Tigers matched that before adding two runs in the third for a 9-5 lead. The Hornets added their final run in the seventh to provide the final.

The Hornets scored a pair of runs in the top of the 1st, one by junior Gabe Sprouse and the other by junior Ryder Bowen, but the Tigers answered back with 4 runs to put them on top. Andy Hermansen, Cade Kurzejewski, Karson Dominick and Cody Hermansen each scored to give Mansfield the 4-2 lead. 

Wellsboro rallied to retake the lead 5-4 after scoring three runs in the top of the 2nd. With two outs sophomore Cameron Owlett reached base on a fielder's choice, followed by senior Caden Smith reaching base on an error. Sophomore Marek Mascho also reached on error but scored both Owlett and Smith, tying the game at 4-all. Mascho would later score on a wild pitch, putting Wellsboro back in front, 5-4.

The Tigers answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead at 7-5 as Andy Hermansen, Shaw and Dominick each scored, then plated their final two runs in the third inning on Davis’ home run, which scored Easton Pequignot, who had reached base on an error. 

Wellsboro's final run came in the top of the 7th by freshman Max Mascho after he singled to lead off the inning. He later scored as brother Marek drove him home on a fly out to left field.

Davis earned the win for the Tigers, starting and allowing 5 runs on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts in 2 innings. Shaw picked up the save, throwing the final 5 innings and giving up one run on one hit with 7 strikeouts.

The Tigers had six hits in the game, led by Davis’ homer. Andy and Cody Hermansen, Shaw, Pequignot and Jason Harer all added base hits, while Davis had two RBI and a run scored, Andy Hermansen scored twice, Dominick scored twice on three walks and Cody Hermansen, Shaw and Pequignot each scored once. 

Wellsboro had 4 hits on the day, one each by Smith, Sprouse, junior Alec Magli and Max Mascho.

Sophomore Dylan Copp started on the mound for the Hornets, going one and a third innings while allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 2 hits with 3 walks. Marek Mascho pitched 4 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Max Mascho also pitched an inning, allowing one hit while walking one and striking out one.

NP-Mansfield starts the season 1-0 and are scheduled to host Towanda on Thursday, while the loss drops Wellsboro to 0-1 to begin the year as they return to action next Tuesday at Towanda.
