NTL BASEBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY TOPS NEB FOR SMALL SCHOOL WIN (2024-04-19)

Northern Tier WEST Sports Report
WESTFIELD — Cowanesque Valley used a big 5th inning to open up a tie game with Northeast Bradford here Friday, going on to avenge a season opening loss to the Panthers with an 11-4 win.

Loagan Stickler threw six innings in relief for the Indians to get the win, allowing an unearned run on two base hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. Ayren Morgan got the start for CV and went one inning while giving up three runs (2 earned) on two hits and a walk with three K’s.

At the plate, Stickler contributed a pair of doubles and scored three runs while Lucas Hamilton had two base hits, 2 RBI and two runs scored and Kaden Cole had two hits, an RBI and scored once.

Nick West, Morgan, Larsen Swimley and Carter Ackley each had a base hit and an RBI with Ackley adding a run scored, while Jordan Vargeson scored twice and Coen Kemp scored once.

NEB took a 3-0 lead after the first inning and CV got one run back in the second inning before going up 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Hamilton hit into a fielder’s choice where Ackley was thrown out at second but NEB threw the ball away trying to turn the double play, allowing both Stickler (reached on an error) and Vargeson (HBP) to score. Hamilton would later steal home to put CV up 4-3.

NEB tied the game back up with a run in the top of the fifth before CV batted around in the bottom half and plated seven runs on a Stickler double and five straight base hits from Ackley, Hamilton, Cole, West and Morgan. Vargeson was intentionally walked in the inning and Kemp loaded the bases when he reached on an error.

Stickler would hit the leadoff hitter in the sixth but struck out the next three NEB batters, then closed the game out with a pair of K’s in the seventh to seal the win.

CV improves to 4-5 overall on the season with the win, including a 2-2 mark in the small school division. They’re scheduled to return to action on Tuesday by hosting NTL-II leader Canton (7-3, 4-0 NTL-II).
