ON TAP TODAY: NP-LIBERTY LADY MOUNTIES TO PUT REGULAR SEASON UNBEATEN STREAK ON THE LINE AT CORNING (2024-04-21)

Northern Tier WEST Sports Report
MANSFIELD — The North Penn-Liberty softball team will travel to Corning to take on the perennially strong Lady Hawks on Monday, putting an impressive, 34 regular season-game unbeaten streak on the line that goes back three seasons for the defending NTL and District 4 champs.

Head Coach Jason Chapel and the Lady Mounties have run off 10 straight wins to start this season, dominating teams to the tune of 101-4 on the scoreboard.

In their NTL and District 4 Class 3A Championship season last year, Liberty was 11-0 and had outscored their opponents 117-19 when they went up to NY State to take on Corning. The teams battled to a 5-5 tie after regulation and each team scored a run in the 8th inning to make it 6-6.

After a scoreless 9th and 10th innings, Liberty got a two-run home run from then-junior Mckenna Lightner and led 8-6 when the game was called .. which with the game ending mid-inning, they would basically erase the top of the 11th .. and Liberty’s two runs .. and go back to the end of the last full inning, leaving the game being called a draw, 6-6, in 10 innings.

Following the Corning win, the Mounties ran off nine more and outscored their opponents 72-10 to finish the regular season undefeated and as NTL champs. After winning the District 4, Class 3A Championship, the Mounties entered the State playoffs, winning their first round game but then falling in the quarterfinals with their lone loss of the season.

The streak can even be taken back to the 2022 season, when Chapel and company won their final three regular season games after falling to a strong Central Columbia squad .. who would then knock Liberty from the District 4 playoffs.

Following Monday’s game at Corning, the Lady Mounties will dive into the second half of their NTL schedule, starting Tuesday with a trip to Wellsboro, and hopefully extend their streak through their final seven regular season contests before starting their post-season run.

Monday’s first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Corning-Painted Post High School.
