NTL BASEBALL: TIGERS WIN PITCHERS' DUAL, EARN SEASON SWEEP OF HORNETS (2024-04-23)

Northern Tier WEST Sports Report
WELLSBORO — NP-Mansfield’s Alex Davis and Cooper Shaw combined to throw a four-hit shutout against rival Wellsboro and top the Hornets 2-0 in a large school match-up here Tuesday.

Davis started and went three innings, allowing just one hit and a walk with four strikeouts, while Shaw earned the win by going the final four innings and giving up three hits and two walks with three K’s.

The duo’s performance negated a strong outing by Wellsboro’s Marek Mascho, who went the complete game and allowed Mansfield’s two runs on four base hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Davis scored both Tiger runs in the game, starting in the first inning when the junior drew a two-out walk and would work his way around the bases on a pair of Wellsboro miscues and eventually score the game’s first run.

The 1-0 Mansfield lead held until the sixth when Davis led off with another walk and again worked his way around the base path and scored to provide the final.

Riley Oakes had a pair of base hits for the Tigers while Shaw and Cade Kurzejewski added singles.

Marek Mascho had two of Wellsboro’s four base hits, including a double, while Caden Smith and Max Mascho had a hit each.

Mansfield improves to 8-4 on the season with the win .. 4-2 in the large school division.. while Wellsboro falls to 2-5 .. 0-4 in the NTL-I. NPM won the teams' first meeting, 9-6.

The Tigers are scheduled to visit Towanda and Wellsboro is scheduled to host Athens, both on Friday.
