NTL BASEBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY LOSES TO SAYRE IN 8TH (2024-04-24)

SAYRE — Cowanesque Valley took a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning at Sayre Wednesday, but the Redskins rallied to send the game into extra innings and ended it in the 8th .. stealing home to seal the 8-7, NTL small school win.

CV scored in their first at-bat to take a 1-0 lead when Larsen Swimley drove in Nick West, who had reached base on an error. 

Swimley finished with two base hits, two RBI and a run scored, West had two hits and three runs scored and Ayren Morgan had two hits, an RBI and scored twice. Kaden Cole had a base hit, Coen Kemp had an RBI and Lucas Hamilton scored a run.

In the top of the third, Morgan reached on a dropped third strike and Swimley reached on an error. Hamilton drew a walk to load the bases before Kemp was hit by a pitch to drive in Morgan. Swimley and Hamilton would score on a Sayre error off the bat of Levi Stahli and CV led 4-0.

Sayre scored two runs in the bottom of the 3rd and CV got them right back in the 4th as West and Morgan both singled and both scored on a Sayre error hit by Jordan Vargeson. After a scoreless 5th the Indians and Redskins each scored a run in the 6th inning to make it 7-3 as they headed to the 7th.

The Redskins rallied in their last chance and strung together four singles and a double to tie the game at seven and into extra innings. After CV came up empty in the top of the 8th, Sayre used a leadoff hit batter to eventually steal home in the bottom of the frame for a “walk off”, 8-7 win. 

Cole took the loss for CV, going three innings and allowing two earned runs on two hits and three walks with one strikeout. Dave Hess pitched three innings of relief and gave up five runs (4 earned) on six base hits with a pair of strikeouts and Morgan threw an inning and two-thirds and allowed an earned run on a hit and a walk with three K’s.

Cowanesque Valley falls to 4-7 overall on the season with the loss and to 3-4 in the NTL-II. They’re scheduled to return to action Friday at Oswayo Valley.
