NTL BASEBALL: WELLSBORO SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH ATHENS (2024-04-26)

WELLSBORO — The Hornets earned a split their doubleheader with Athens here Friday, taking Game One 5-4 before falling in the nightcap by the same score. 

In the first outing, Wellsboro’s Caden Smith threw a complete game and scattered five Athens’ hits across seven innings, allowing four runs (1 earned) while walking just one Wildcat and striking out five. 

The Hornets scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning for Smith, as Dustin Owlett walked and Coen Tennis and Cameron Owlett each reached base on errors. A Marek Mascho double scored Dustin Owlett and Tennis and Gabe Sprouse would single to drive in both Cam Owlett and Mascho. 

Wellsboro added to their lead in the 5th when Marek Mascho singled and would work his way around the bases and eventually score on a wild pitch. Up 5-0, the Hornets gave up three runs to Athens in the 6th inning and the Wildcats cut the lead to one in the top of the 7th, but Smith pitched out of the inning and claimed the win for the Hornets. 

Sprouse had two base hits and two RBI in the win while Marek Mascho had a double, two RBI and a run scored, Smith had two base hits, Max Mascho and Dustin Owlett each had a hit and a run scored and Tennis and Coen Owlet each scored a run. 

In Game Two, Wellsboro scored a run in the top of the 1st inning on an RBI single by Sprouse that scored Smith, who had reached base on an Athens’ error. The Wildcats answered with three runs in the bottom half of the opening frame before the Hornets tied it up with a pair of runs in the 4th inning. 

Lucas Cuneo reached on an error, Alec Magli singled and Marek Mascho was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Wellsboro in the 4th. Cuneo and Magli would both score .. one on a wild pitch, the other on a passed ball .. and the game remained tied at three until the 7th inning. 

Marek Mascho reached base on an error with two outs and would eventually score on another Athens’ error, off the bat of Sprouse, to take a 4-3 lead into the bottom 7.

After getting Athens to pop out to lead off the inning, the Hornets allowed a single and a walk, followed by another Athens’ single that tied the game at four. The Wildcats would string together one more base hit and “walk off” with the 5-4 win.

Sprouse took the loss for Wellsboro, going six and a third innings and allowing five runs (4 earned) on eight base hits and three walks with three K’s.

Magli finished with two base hits and scored a run while Sprouse had a hit and an RBI, Marek Mascho had a double and scored a run and Cuneo and Smith each scored.

The Hornets, now 3-6 on the season, are scheduled to visit Sayre on Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. game.
