NTL SOFTBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY TO HOST FAMILIAR FOE IN CLASS 2A QUARTERFINALS (2024-05-23)

WESTFIELD, PA — The Cowanesque Valley softball team will open their 2024 postseason at home against Northeast Bradford on Friday, looking to avenge a first round loss to the Panthers in last season’s District 4 Class 2A playoffs. 

CV went 17-3 in the regular season to earn the No. 3 seed, with losses to North Penn-Liberty, Towanda and Wellsville (NY) and a pair of wins over fellow small school NEB. 

The Lady Panthers went 12-8 and are the No. 6 seed .. the same spot NEB was in last season when they upset CV in the first round. 

CV started the season 7-0, lost to Liberty, then ran off nine more straight wins before falling to Towanda and Wellsville (NY). They finished the regular season with a 4-3 win over No. 4 seed Troy (15-4).

NEB finished the regular season with a 6-2 run, outscoring their opponents 98-9 in their wins and losing 7-2 to Liberty and 10-7 to Troy.

The teams played earlier in the season just a few days apart, with CV winning both, 13-1 and 13-4. The Lady Indians had 11 hits in the first win and 15 in Game Two.

CV scored the game’s final nine runs in the second win and got home runs from Ruby Sherman and Keyana Thomas.

Sherman (HR, 1B, 1B, 3 RBI, R) and Thomas (HR, 3B, 1B, 3 RBI, 3R) each finished with three base hits, while Zeraya Wilson (2B, 1B, RBI, R), Katie Adams (3B, 1B, 3R), Tabitha Piper (1B, 1B, 2R) and McKenna Cary (1B, 1B, 2RBI, R) each had two hits, Logan Hamilton (1B, R) had one and Maddie Millard scored a run. Sherman allowed four runs on five base hits and two walks in the win while striking out six NEB batters. 

The winner of Friday’s quarterfinal game will advance to take on the winner between No. 2 seed Muncy (19-1) and No. 7 and fellow Northern Tioga squad Williamson (11-10).

Tickets for Friday’s District game in Westfield are not required.
