WELLSBORO — Wellsboro senior Isobel Anderegg signed her National Letter of Intent on Monday, May 6, to swim collegiately next year at Alfred University.
Anderegg has been a three-year member of the swim team and has qualified for the District IV swim championships each year. Most recently, Anderegg recorded two top-ten finishes, a 5th place finish in the 100 Breaststroke (1:16.29) and a 6th place finish in the 100 Free (58.61), helping the Lady Hornets to an 8th place overall finish, the highest out of this year's independent teams.
"It's a small, beautiful campus that I feel super safe on, and because it's so small, I feel I can have good relationships with my professors and actually be able to ask questions. Overall it's the perfect fit for me."
Anderegg, who plans on majoring in psychology, became interested in Alfred last year as a junior after learning more about their course offerings in that field. While on her visits, she spent time with the Psychology Department staff and was awarded the "Out Of The Ordinary" junior scholarship, the highest scholarship Alfred gives out.
"Alfred is really known for their psych program, and the swim team felt like a perfect fit for me. It checked all of my boxes. Swimming has been a huge part of my life," she added. "I've been swimming since age seven and I can't imagine my life without it. Swimming has literally shaped me as a person, it has taught me so much self-determination, perseverance and motivation, and also self discipline. My communication and leadership skills have also grown being a team captain the last two years. It's been so much fun. Coach (Brian) Striker at Alfred runs a great program, and I can't wait to take my career to the next level and be a part of it."
Anderegg knew she wanted to study psychology in college because of Wellsboro's course offerings in the subject.
"There are so many psych-related electives. I took AP Psychology, I did dual enrollment, I took Sociology, Intro to Psychology. The amount of courses that Wellsboro offers really opened me up and I was like, 'hey, I enjoy psych,' so it was because of the variety."
Coach Rebecca Dodson-Webster noted, "Izzy is very detail-oriented and was the kind of athlete that would come to practice with questions, 'how can I do this better?' or 'what can I do in this particular thing?', plus she had her other teams. She received great coaching from her 'Y' team, Coach (Paul) Kurtz, and she was working with a number of coaches, which she used to her benefit to get lots of perspective. She is very organized, very dedicated, and focused. She had goals and she worked hard to meet them."
Dodson-Webster also thinks Anderegg will "make a splash" next year once she joins the program.
"We've been closely following the times to see where she would fit in. She started doing visits early in the recruiting process and she'll find a good spot on the team. I'm very proud of Izzy and the program. We've had a lot of student-athletes that have gone on to have successful college swimming careers for years, so she's just another great product of this program."
