THE SPORTS REPORTS: CORNING'S KHRAPKO TOPS SUPER 7 AS ALL-REGION 'BOYS TENNIS PLAYER OF YEAR;' TIOGA COUNTY WELL-REPRESENTED (2024-06-29)

Like a lot of sports going on at Corning, the boys’ tennis team excelled, posting a 12-0 record on the season, including a STAC West Championship, and the program’s first-ever overall STAC Championship.

Leading the way is The Sports Reports’ 2023-24 “Boys Tennis Player of the Year,” Corning’s Denis Khrapko. The senior went 6-2 on the year at first singles, was second at the Section IV Tournament, and made it to the Section IV State Qualifier.

The “Doubles Team of the Year” is Corning’s Cole Hawkins and Djordie Marjanovic. The duo went 10-0 during the regular season, and won both their matches in the STAC playoffs.

Cole Hawkins is also the “Newcomer of the Year.” The first-year player was third at the Section IV Doubles tournament with playing partner, Alex Peng, as they made the Section IV State Qualifier.

Wellsboro coach Andy Borzok is the “Coach of the Year.” Despite roster turnover, Borzok led the Hornets to another undefeated league season and the District IV team playoffs.

Connor Martinec, Corning: Martinec went 10-1 on the season, and took third at the Section IV Tournament.

Bailey Poll, Towanda: The NTL “Player of the Year” who went undefeated in league play, Poll finished 12-5 on the season at first singles for Towanda.

Alex Peng, Corning: Peng went 6-2 in singles action on the season, and made it to the Section IV Doubles State Qualifier playing with Hawkins.

Daniel Harmon, North Penn-Liberty: Harmon was an NTL first-team all-star this year with a record of 7-7 playing out of first singles for the Mounties.

Jacob Abadi, Wellsboro:
Abadi was an NTL first-team all-star this year playing out of first singles for the Hornets.

The Second 7
Divye Agrawal, Notre Dame:
Agrawal was the team’s MVP, going 4-4 on the year at first singles.

Haven Poll, Towanda: Poll was an NTL first-team all-star with a record of 9-9 playing out of second singles for the Knights.

Luke Rothermel, Wellsboro: Rothermel was an NTL first-team all-star with a record of 9-3 playing out of second singles for the Hornets.

Sam Masaki, Corning: Masaki went 9-1 this year for the Hawks at fourth singles.

Sam Beyer, Owego: Beyer was the first singles player for Owego, then played doubles at the Section IV, Class B tournament, winning a match.

Michael Wandell, Newark Valley: Wandell was a first singles player for the Cardinals, and had a strong showing at the IAC Tournament with an upset win.

Abdullah Haved & Jacob Staats, Horseheads:
The duo went 7-1 on the season and made it the Section IV State Qualifier after taking silver at sectionals.
