NTL GIRLS SOCCER: WELLSBORO LOSES TO ATHENS IN OVERTIME (2024-08-27)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportWELLSBORO — The Lady Hornets took a 1-0 lead into the half of their season opener against Athens here Tuesday, but the Lady Wildcats rallied to send the game into overtime and netted the game winner just :33 seconds in to earn the 2-1 win.
Sophomore Ella Boyce put Wellsboro on the board in the 17th minute and the Hornets held on to the 1-0 lead entering the halftime intermission.
About 8 minutes into the second half, Addy Wheeler found Delanie Patton about 18 yards away from the net and she delivered a shot into the upper-90 on the left side to tie the game at 1-all.
The two teams battled the remainder of the second half, but neither could dent the other’s defenses.
Just 33 seconds into the sudden-death overtime period, Abby Burgess delivered a pass to Lizzie Gorsline, who split the defense and drove a shot into the back of the net for the game-winner.
Athens had a 19-4 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Keeper Jadyn Dunlap had 10 saves in net for Wellsboro.
Wellsboro (0-1) is scheduled to visit North Penn-Mansfield on Thursday.
