Northern Tier West Sports Report
Kerrah Clymer put up some gaudy numbers at the plate for 15-6 Wellsboro this season, including a .486 batting average, with 34 hits, 32 runs scored, 25 RBI and a .575 on-base percentage. She had seven home runs and added six doubles and three triples. For that, Clymer is the Northern Tier West Sports Report All-Tioga County Offensive Player of the Year. The senior also threw 99 innings as the Hornets’ #1 pitcher, with 10 wins and 83 strikeouts. For that, Clymer is the All-Tioga County Pitcher of the Year. Because of her performance both in the circle and at the plate, Clymer is the clear choice as the Northern Tier West Sports Report All-Tioga County Softball Player of the Year.

The Defensive Player of the Year is Wellsboro’s Jordyn Abernathy. The sophomore was more than solid at second base for Wellsboro this season, committing only three errors on 63 chances, and also turned three double plays. The solid middle-infielder also had a great year at the plate for Wellsboro, batting .359 with a .432 on-base percentage, 28 hits .. including a home run, seven doubles and two triples .. 28 runs scored and eight RBI.

Due to last year’s lost season, a majority of this season’s athletes could be considered rookies, not just the ones in ninth grade. Sophomores and even some juniors and seniors who didn’t play varsity two years ago could be considered “new”, but our selection for the All-West Rookie of the Year is Williamson ninth-grader MiKenna Buchanan. Buchanan served as the 2-13 Warriors’ number one pitcher, and while she did not benefit from an abundance of run support or outstanding defense, Buchanan persevered in the circle.  She thrived at the plate, as her .535 on-base percentage was second only to Clymer in the West, and her .472 batting average was among the top five. She collected 25 base hits and has shown that she can produce against some of the league’s best, and older, players.

Joining Clymer, Abernathy and Buchanan on the All-Tioga County First team are:

Makayla Vargeson, Cowanesque Valley. The senior shortstop knocked in 30 runs for the 12-9 Indians, with 25 hits, including five home runs, six doubles and two triples, while only striking out three times. She batted .342, had an on-base percentage of .392, and was a steady leader for the young Lady Indians.

Maddi Bordas, Wellsboro. Bordas was a tough out for the Hornets this season. The sophomore batted .484 with 31 hits, including two home runs, 10 doubles and a triple. She knocked in 19 runs, scored 18 runs, and reached base at a .535 clip. A versatile player, Bordas could play most positions in the field, while spending a majority of her time at third base.

Jena Boyce, Wellsboro. The senior shortstop combined with Abernathy, Bordas and Emma Coolidge at first to form the toughest infield in the West, if not the league. Boyce had 31 hits on the season, including a home run, two doubles and two triples, while batting .397 with a .435 on-base percentage. She knocked in 23 runs, scored 25 herself and struck out only twice all season.

Katie Adams, Cowanesque Valley. Adams, a first year, burst onto the varsity softball scene with outstanding numbers at the plate this season for 12-9 CV. She batted .475 and had a .523 on-base percentage while collecting 28 base hits, 26 runs scored and seven RBI.

Saige Lehman, North Penn-Liberty. It took a few games for Lehman to become a full-time player for the 5-14 Lady Mounties, but once the first-year catcher solidified herself in NPL’s lineup, she produced with a .414 batting average and an impressive .489 on-base percentage. She had 17 base hits, including five doubles, and scored 13 runs, with four RBI, all while handling a young Mountie pitching staff with skill beyond her age.

Chelsie English, Wellsboro. The senior catcher was an invaluable asset at and behind the plate for the Hornets this season. She had five home runs and six doubles while batting .309 and reaching base at a .368 clip. English had 21 hits and was second in the West with 29 RBI, while scoring 18 runs of her own.
