NTL BOYS SOCCER: HORNETS RUN PAST MOUNTIES TO STAY UNBEATEN (2024-09-05)
Northern Tier West Sports ReportLIBERTY, PA — Wellsboro got four goals from four different players as the Hornets remained undefeated on the season with a 4-1 win over the host North Penn-Liberty Mounties on Thursday.
Less than six minutes into the game, senior Micaiah Fitch opened the scoring with a goal off an assist from Micah Vickery and less than three minutes later the Hornets would take a 2-0 lead with a score by senior Braeden Abernathy.
Junior David Seeling added the first half's final goal for the Hornets with just over 30 minutes remaining, assisted by senior Alex Citrino.
The 3-0 lead stood until just under 12 minutes remained in the contest, when NP-Liberty’s Adynn Wheeland got one past Wellsboro’s keeper and the Hornets now led 3-1.
Wellsboro's final goal of the game came roughly a minute after the Mounties added their lone goal as junior Jude Cuneo scored unassisted.
"Liberty's high line gave us some problems moving forward and a miscue prevented the clean sheet," Wellsboro head coach Todd Fitch said. "We also struggled to finish our shots. With that said, the boys adapted to a different surface, generated scoring opportunities producing four goals and kept North Penn-Liberty under pressure when they were in possession. Ultimately, we came away with the result we were after."
Wellsboro took 19 shots on the afternoon and held Liberty to just 5 shots on goal and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Tom made 5 saves, while Mountie keeper Deakon Valentine made 15.
The win improves the Hornets to 4-0. The team is back in action at home on Saturday against Milton.
North Penn-Liberty drops to 2-2 on the season. They’re scheduled to host non-league Montoursville on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
