NTL FOOTBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY BEATS SAYRE 50-21 FOR FIRST WIN (2024-09-13)

Northern Tier West Sports Report
SAYRE — Down at the half against Sayre, Cowanesque Valley outscored the Redskins 44-7 in the final two quarters to earn their first win of the season, 50-21.

The Cowanesque Valley offense produced 336 yards of offense in the second half, adding to an 84-yard touchdown pass from Graham Hess to Dave Hess 58 seconds into the second quarter to put the Indians near 500 yards gained in the win.

That was the game’s first points of the night to put CV up 6-0 as neither team scored in the first quarter.

After having to punt the ball away on the game’s first drive, Cowanesque Valley fumbled the ball away on its first snap of the night into the hands of Sayre’s Jamier Kole.

Just 31 yards from the end zone to start Sayre’s second drive, Sayre gave the ball right back to Cowanesque Valley inside the 10-yard line with a fumble of its own.

The Redskins forced a three-and-out on the next CV drive and went 39 yards to the 9-yard line on eight plays, but a holding call brought them back to the 19-yard line, where, on the first play of the second quarter, Green was intercepted by Jeavon Eick, setting up Cowanesque Valley’s only touchdown of the first half.

Starting on the CV 49-yard line, the Redskins went on a 13-play drive that ended on a 16-yard TD that tied the game 6-6 with 4:06 left in the first half. Sayre’s kick was good for a 7-6 lead.

The next three combined drives saw no first downs from either team, giving Sayre the ball at its own 35-yard line with 1:55 left in the half.

With under 50 seconds to go, the hosts faced a fourth-and-2 play at the 34-yard line. They went into punt formation, but a direct snap went to Kiyshon Kole, who rumbled his way 20 yards to the 14-yard line.

A couple of spikes later, Sayre once again had a fourth-and-14 inside the red zone. This time it was at the 18-yard line with two seconds left.

And this time, Green threw to the right side of the end zone where Pellicano, responsible for 149 yards and five catches of Green’s 221 passing yards on 11 completions, was falling backwards just inside the goal line. He made the catch and the Redskins were up 14-6 at the half.

The Redskins tried an onside kick to begin the third quarter, but Cowanesque Valley fell on it at the Sayre 48-yard line.

The Hess connection immediately gave CV a 16-yard gain on the first play and Graham Hess later erased a 15-yard penalty with an 18-yard run to bring up a fourth-and-2 that was then converted. The CV quarterback completed 10 of 18 passes for 186 yards and ran for 60 yards on nine keepers.

Dave Hess ran the ball in from the 2-yard line on the eighth play of the drive and then ran in for two points to tie the game 14-14 with 7:23 left in the quarter.

Sayre punted on the sixth play of its first drive of the third quarter and the Indians were at the beginning of gaining momentum with a five-play, 63-yard touchdown drive that ended with Kegan Lane running 13-yards for a 20-14 lead with 1:37 left in the period.

On the first play following CV’s go-ahead touchdown, Green fired the ball up the middle where a CV defender got his hands on the ball, but the ball popped out and Pellicano caught it from behind for what turned into a 64-yard score. The extra point gave Sayre a 21-20 lead with 1:21 left in the third frame.

But the Sayre defense was unable to stop the Indians offense the rest of the way.

Dave Hess, who finished with 143 receiving yards on four catches and 109 rushing yards on 14 carries, had a 27-yard touchdown run with 19 seconds left in the third quarter and a Graham Hess two-point conversion made it 28-21 CV.

After an interception by Colten Begley, another 27-yard touchdown run by Dave Hess made it 36-21 with 9:26 left in the game.

The Redskins punted on their two last full drives of the night, while a Jeavon Eick three-yard touchdown catch with 5:06 left and 20-yard touchdown run by Dave Hess with 2:04 left hammered home a decisive 29-point Cowanesque Valley victory.

Defensively, Lane had seven solo tackles and three assisted while Graham Hess was in on six and had two solo stops.

CV, now 1-3 on the season, will visit Wellsboro next Friday as part of the Hornets’ homecoming festivities.
