NTL FOOTBALL: SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT 4TH-QUARTER COMEBACK DOWNS COWANESQUE VALLEY (2024-09-27)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportWESTFIELD, PA — South Williamsport scored 14 fourth-quarter points to beat Cowanesque Valley 23-19 in an NTL small school match-up here Friday night.
CV led 19-9 entering the fourth quarter, but the visiting Mounties had a pair of touchdown runs on back-to-back possessions in the final frame to cap scoring drives from one and two yards out. South took the lead, 23-19, with 8:18 to play.
After a scoreless first quarter, both teams’ defenses got each on the scoreboard. Freshman Stevie Olson grabbed up a SW fumble and took it 52 yards for the score just 13 seconds into the second quarter. South would get a couple points back when they came up with a safety against the Indians’ offense and the CV lead was 6-2.
CV QB Graham Hess ran for a 28-yard touchdown before the break and CV’s PAT attempt was good to give the Indians a 13-2 lead as they headed to the locker rooms.
Hess led Cowanesque Valley with 115 rushing yards on 11 carries and had two rushing touchdowns.
South made it 13-9 with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter before Hess scored again, this time from 10 yards out. The XP was blocked and CV led 19-9 as the teams entered the final frame.
South scored from the 1-yard line two minutes into the fourth and the kick was good to cut the CV lead to 19-16 and less than two minutes later the Mounties scored on a 2-yard plunge. The good XP provided the 23-19 final.
South out-gained Cowanesque, 324-238.
Dave Hess had 44 yards on 8 carries and Kegan Lane had four rushes for 30 yards.
Graham Hess completed 4-10 passing attempts for 40 yards with three interceptions on the night and Levi Stahli had three catches good for 35 yards.
Defensively, Lane had eight solo tackles and was in on 10 more, while Graham and Dave Hess each had four solo stops and Olson and Stahli each had a sack.
CV, now 1-5 on the season, gets a long week as they’ll host CMVT next Saturday for a 7 p.m. game.
