NTL VOLLEYBALL: WELLSBORO EDGES RIVAL NORTH PENN-LIBERTY 3-2 IN INSTANT CLASSIC (2024-09-30)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportWELLSBORO — The Lady Hornets and North Penn-Liberty put on quite a show for a packed, heavily pinked-out gymnasium here Monday, as Wellsboro came back from a set down and won the final two to edge the Lady Mounties, 3-2, in the inaugural Chuck Tameris Memorial Volleyball Game.
The host Hornets won the first set 27-25, with Liberty taking the next two .. 25-23 and 25-21 .. before Wellsboro forced a 5th set with a 25-18 win in the 4th and sealed the large school division win with a 15-12 victory in the final set.
Wellsboro’s Lexi Urena finished the night with 16 kills, 16 digs and 18 service points with four aces, while Hornet libero Maddy Cruttenden had 30 digs, five assists and 12 points.
Taylor Main added 15 digs and 11 assists, Paige Logsdon had six kills, nine service points with six aces and three blocks, Blake Eckart had nine kills and Ellie Largey had 18 assists.
The Hornets came back from being down 17-10 in the first set to tie it at 22-all and went on to win 27-25 to go up 1-0.
Liberty went up 10-3 in the second set before Wellsboro closed the gap to two at 15-13. The Mounties would pull away again and led 23-15 .. the largest lead for either team in all five sets .. but the Hornets pulled to within a point before ultimately falling 25-23 as NPL tied things up at one set apiece.
A tight third set saw the squads trade points and seven ties before Wellsboro took a 9-7 lead and push it to 10-7 .. the biggest lead for either team in the set until the Mounties finished the set with four straight points to win 25-21.
Wellsboro built a 10-4 lead in the 4th set before the Mounties tied it up at 13-all, but the Hornets finished on a 12-5 run to win 25-18 and force a deciding 5th set.
The Hornets jumped out to a 5-1 lead before Liberty went on a 6-2 run to tie it up at 7-7. Wellsboro built a lead of 13-10 and finished the Mounties off with a 15-12 victory to seal the win.
For the Lady Mounties, Kameron Lightner finished with 12 kills, seven digs and six aces, while Claire Dominick had 10 kills, seven digs and seven aces on the night.
Haley Litzelman added eight kills, Maddy Youmans had 20 assists and four digs, Kaylee Graham had three kills, three digs, two assists and a block, Rylie Smith had 16 digs, two aces and a kill and Addison Weightman had 11 assists, three digs and an ace.
Wellsboro improves to 10-3 on the season while North Penn-Liberty falls to 6-4. The Mounties next match is Tuesday at home with Troy, while the Hornets are scheduled to host Athens on Thursday.
