HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY EDGES CMVT 29-24 IN FINAL MINUTES (2024-10-05)

Northern Tier WEST Sports Report
WESTFIELD, PA — Cowanesque Valley scored a late 4th-quarter touchdown to edge Columbia Montour Vo-Tech 29-24 in a non-league football match-up here Saturday afternoon.

CV led 21-8 at halftime before surrendering 16 unanswered points to the Rams in the third and early fourth quarters and taking over near midfield with just over seven minutes left in the game.

The Indians’ 11-play scoring drive was highlighted by a pair of 4th-down conversions and ended on a Graham Hess 1-yard TD run with 1:22 left and a Hess to Levi Stahli 2-point conversion pass to seal the 29-24 win for the Indians.

Senior QB Hess completed 8-of-19 passing for 86 yards and gained 59 yards on the ground with three TDs on 11 carries.

Sophomore Dave Hess had 18 rushes for 107 yards and a score, while classmate Kegan Lane had four catches for 43 yards and a 22-yard run for CV.

CMVT opened the scoring with a 7-play drive that ended with a 20-yard TD pass and a successful 2-point try on the first possession of the game, taking an 8-0 lead at the 8:35 mark of the first frame.

CV had their first possession end on the CMVT 3-yard line, turning the ball over on downs after an 11-play drive came up empty. They’d force the Rams to punt tho and took over in Ram territory near the end of the first quarter.

Graham Hess would punch it in from the one as time expired and Dave Hess ran in the 2-pojnt conversion to tie the game at 8-all as they headed to the second quarter.

The Indians recovered a CMVT fumble on the ensuing kickoff, but would again turn the ball over on downs, this time at the Ram 23. Graham Hess would get the ball right back however as he picked off a Ram pass and returned it to the CMVT 5-yard line. On 2nd-and-goal, Hess scrambled and tucked the ball and found the end zone to put CV up 14-8 after a failed 2-point try with 8:48 left in the half.

CV again forced a CMVT turnover on downs and had a chance to extend their lead before the break. Back-to-back completions from Graham Hess to Levi Stahli and Jeavon Eick and a 22-yard run by Lane set the Indians up at the Ram 17, where Dave Hess would finish the drive with a score with 2:12 left. Gavin Churchill made the PAT and CV took a 21-8 lead into halftime.

Defensively, Lane, Graham Hess and Lowell Baker each had five solo tackles while Baker assisted on 10 more and Lane and Hess were in on eight each. Hess had a pick and Stevie Olson recorded a sack for the Indians.

CMVT controlled the third quarter, scoring twice after getting an interception off Graham Hess and forcing a CV punt. The second Ram score gave CMVT a 24-21 lead with 7:25 remaining in the game and set up the Indians’ game-winning drive.

Six rushes by Dave Hess, including a 19-yard gain on 4th-and-1 from the CMVT 25, set up brother Graham’s 6-yard game-winner.
