ROME — Cowanesque Valley’s Natalie Yonker was the top freshman finisher during the girls’ varsity cross country race at the NTL Coaches’ Invitational Saturday.

Yonker (20:40.1) came in fifth overall, just behind Troy senior Alyssa Parks.

“I felt pretty good,” Yonker said about the top five finish. “I definitely wanted the PR, when I saw the time I felt pretty good.”

Three of the girls ahead of her she’ll see again at the District IV Championships, so this was a good experience for the freshman.

“I love it, I like being able to see the people I’m competing against,” Yonker said. “It pushes me to really do my best.”

While the CV boys have gotten most of the attention the past few years, the girls’ have done a good job getting a runner to states, too. Yonker hopes she’ll be the one to represent the Indians this season.

“I would really like to make it to states,” she said. “It’s definitely a little nerve-wracking but I’m pretty confident. I’m just trying to stay confident in that - even if I don’t make states, I would really like knowing that I pushed myself and got to work with an awesome girl - I love everyone here.”

Teammate Torrina Startton (21:54.9) was 10th overall.

On the boys’ side CV took eighth with 175 points.

Hunter Simonds (18:22.9) led the way with a 17th place finish, with Mathew McKee (19:38.5) 37th. Judah Mummert (20:01) took 47th, Troy Madison (20:45.5) came in 52nd, and Nathaniel Boyer (20;56.3) was 55th.
