HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER: HORNETS ADVANCE TO DISTRICT SEMIS WITH 1-0 WIN OVER MONTOURSVILLE (2024-10-26)

Northern Tier WEST Sports Report
LOYALSOCK — A first half goal by Lucas Cuneo held up and gave Wellsboro a 1-0 shutout victory over Montoursville in the District IV Class 2A Boys Soccer Quarterfinals here Saturday.

Cuneo scored on a header with 16.9 seconds remaining in the opening half off a corner kick from Alex Citrino. The score remained that way as junior Camden Tom recorded his 8th clean sheet of the season with four saves.

Wellsboro took eight shots on goal and held the Warriors to just five, while Montoursville had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

"We were much more ambitious moving forward and more than doubled our shots on goal since our match with Montoursville a few weeks ago," head coach Todd Fitch said. "We also capitalized on a set piece just before the half, which proved to be the game winner. When we didn’t have possession, we cut their looks at goal and Camden came up big on four strikes keeping a clean sheet. The boys put together a complete game tonight and I am very proud of their resolve and execution!"

Wellsboro (15-4) will take on top-seed Lewisburg on Tuesday, October 29 at a site and time yet to be determined.
