HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: KNEFLEY, FAIRCHILD REPRESENT NP-MANSFIELD AT STATES (2024-11-02)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportHERSHEY — NP-Mansfield’s James Knefley went from just making states at districts, to finishing in the top 45 at the PIAA, Class AA Boys’ Cross-country Championships Saturday.
Knefley was the highest NTL finisher in the race, taking 42nd in 17:19.
“I was a little worried coming into it because it’s my first state race,” Knefley said. “My goal was top 60, and running around 17:30, and I ended up running like a 17:20.”
Knefley was 58th at the mile mark and stayed in right around there until the second half of the race, when he went from 53rd to 45th from the 2-mile to the 4K marks. He then dropped three more spots the final 1,000 meters.
“I was going to go out, get in position, not too fast, and work my way through the field,” he said. “That’s what I ended up doing.”
In the Class AA girls’ race Jaci Fairchild took 107th in 21:38.
