NTL BOYS SOCCER: WELLSBORO WINS 3RD STRAIGHT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP IN '24 (2024-11-15)

Northern Tier WEST Sports Report
WELLSBORO — The Hornets continued their dominance in the NTL in 2024, winning their third straight league title behind a high-powered offense and a stingy defense.

Head Coach Todd Fitch and the Hornets finished the season 15-5, highlighted by a 12-0 run through the league where Wellsboro outscored their NTL counterparts 66-10 and recorded five shutouts.

The Hornets ran off five straight wins to start the season, mixing league wins over Galeton (12-0), Athens (1-0) and North Penn-Liberty (4-1) with shutouts of non-conference foes Jersey Shore (3-0) and South Williamsport (5-0). A 2-1 loss to Milton would be followed by three more league wins .. over Williamson (3-1), Troy (8-2) and NEB (5-2).

After stumbling in a 5-3 loss to Hughesville, the Hornets ran off six straight wins to finish out their league schedule and claim their annual title. A pair of non-league losses, to Montoursville and Loyalsock, left the Hornets with a 14-4 regular season record and the No. 4 seed in the District IV Class 2A playoffs.

A 1-0 win in a rematch with Montoursville got the Hornets into the semis, where they’d fall to eventual D4 champ Lewisburg, 4-0. The shutout would be only the second on the season that the Hornets suffered.

Wellsboro scored 78 goals during the year, led by 21 goals each by seniors Micaiah Fitch and Alex Citrino. Junior David Seeling added 14 goals and senior Lucas Cuneo had 12. Citrino led the Hornets with 14 assists while Seeling had 12, Fitch had 10 and Cuneo had 8.

Junior Mason Nowak had three goals, senior Micah Vickery and junior Jude Cuneo had two each .. with Cuneo adding 6 assists .. and seniors Gabe Sprouse and Braeden Abernathy and sophomore Mason Brill had one goal each.

A stout Hornet defense, led by Vickery, Sprouse and seniors Jack Bryant and Owen Stevens, helped keeper Camden Tom record 8 clean sheets on the season. The junior goalie played 1,463 minutes in net and allowed 26 scores for a 1.422 GAA.

River Moyer joins a large group of seniors that Coach Fitch will look to replace next season, which will be aided by a very successful junior varsity squad that went 12-1-2 this year, and a junior high club that went 15-1.
