NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: WOODRING LAST SECOND 3-POINTER LIFTS COWANESQUE VALLEY TO OVERTIME WIN OVER NORTH PENN-MANSFIELD (2024-12-18)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportMANSFIELD — Ashley Woodring hit a last-second three pointer in overtime to lift the CV Lady Indians to a 57-56 win over North Penn-Mansfield in an NTL girls basketball thriller here Wednesday.
Woodring’s game winner was her second three of the extra frame as the senior tied the game at 54-all with a minute left to play. After missed shots by both NP-Mansfield and CV, freshman Maddie McNamara grabbed a rebound and went coast-to-coast for her 21st and 22nd points of the game, giving the Lady Tigers the 56-54 lead.
The Tigers’ point guard fouled out seconds later and after two missed free throws by CV, NPM had the ball and a chance to run out the clock or force CV to foul. The Indians’ pressure on Mansfield’s ball handlers caused a missed lay-up by NPM with 18 seconds left, however, and Woodring grabbed the rebound and CV ended up with an inbound play under their own basket with :09.3 showing on the clock.
Woodring inbounded to Lily Vargeson and darted for the right wing, where CV’s point guard found Woodring for the game winner.
Woodring finished with 20 points to lead CV, with 7 coming in the extra period and 18 in the second half. Starr Ordway added 16 points .. including her only point of the 4th quarter, which came on a free throw to tie the game at 46 and forced the overtime. Ella Churchill had 10 points .. all in the second half .. while Jessie Quick had 7 and Vargeson netted 4 points.
With CV’s top two scorers .. Woodring and Churchill .. struggling to score in the first half, Ordway kept the Lady Indians close with 7 points in a 16-11 NPM first quarter.
McNamara, who finished with a game-high 22 points, scored 6 points in the 2nd frame as the Lady Tigers extended their lead to 26-20 at the break.
Woodring netted 9 points in the 3rd quarter as CV took a 36-35 lead after three quarters of play. The Tigers re-took the lead at 45-41 with 4 minutes left in regulation before Woodring hit a pair of free throws and after a Kameron Lightner free throw, cut the lead to one as Churchill came up with a steal and a lay-in to make it 46-45 with 1:30 remaining.
Ordway would make it to the line for a pair of free throws .. missing both. But a NPM lane violation gave Ordway another chance and the junior connected to tie the game at 46 and send the game to OT, setting up Woodring’s heroics.
Reagan Watkins and Lightner joined McNamara in double-digits with 14 and 11 points, while Avalon Rew added 4 points, Elaina Shaw had 3 and Claire Dominick had 2 points.
Cowanesque Valley snaps a three-game losing streak with the win and stands at 2-4 on the season. They’re scheduled to return to play on Friday when they host Athens.
