NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: TIGERS STAY UNBEATEN, TAKE 'PEG BERGUSON TROPHY' BACK WITH WIN OVER WELLSBORO (2024-12-19)
Northern Tier WEST Sports ReportMANSFIELD — North Penn-Mansfield put three players into double-figures and rolled to the most lopsided win in the “Peg” Berguson Memorial Trophy Game history, beating rival Wellsboro 63-33 here Thursday night to stay unbeaten on the season.
The Margaret (Peg) Berguson Memorial Trophy was established to honor the life of former Wellsboro Spanish teacher Mrs. Margaret Berguson in 2015 by students from Wellsboro and North Penn-Mansfield High Schools. The Tigers’ win snaps a two-year Wellsboro winning streak and gives NP-Mansfield a 6-5 edge in the annual contest.
Mansfield used balanced scoring Thursday night to earn the win, led by Alex Davis’ 16 points, 13 points by Cooper Shaw and 10 from Brady Stetter. Andy Hermansen added 8 points, Jason Harer had 6, Tate Strange scored 5 points, Talon D’Angelo had 3 and Kevin Clemente-Vasquez had 2 points.
Wellsboro’s Mitch Lechler kept the Hornets within striking distance in the first quarter, scoring all of his 8 points in the game in the opening frame as the Tigers took a 19-13 lead.
Mansfield opened the game up in the second, extending their lead to 38-20 at the break behind 7 Shaw points. Davis scored 9 in a 16-6 Tiger third quarter where a 30-point advantage was taken by NPM to kick the running clock into play, and the home team took the final frame 9-7 to provide the final.
Jonathan Carl led Wellsboro with 9 points in the loss, while Luke Rothermel added 5 points, Colin Fletcher had 4, Marek Mascho had 3 and Griffin Morral and Max Mascho each chipped in with 2 points.
Wellsboro, now 2-3 on the season, is scheduled to return to action Saturday at Montoursville.
